MLA vs APA

Three similarities between MLA and APA-style documentation are:
1. Both have the page number at the top of each page.
2. Both are double spaced throughout entire paper.
3. Both have works cited pages that are alphabetized by authors' last names.

Five differences between MLA and APA-style documentation are:
1. MLA has a heading in the upper left hand corner of the first page and APA uses the entire first page as a title page with the heading in the middle of the page.
2. MLA has the person's last name at the top of each page and APA does not.
3. APA has an abstract and MLA does not.
4. APA has a shortened title at the top left corner of each page and MLA does not.
5. For MLA, quotations of more than 4 lines must be indented while for APA, quotations of 40+ words must be indented.

I think this assignment is asking me to look at writing from a different perspective. It is much different than the high school writing I am used to. It will familiarize me with different types of writing and allow me to see how writing may fit with my major. Rather than using my writing to argue or persuade people about certain topics, I will instead be using it to discover more information about my interests for my future. I think the assignment will also help me to be more open to different genres of writing and branch out from what I am most comfortable with.

Questions/confusions:
1. What are some examples of academic and non-academic writings?
2. What do you mean when you say concentrate questions on why they write in particular genres?
3. What exactly do you mean by "give you more information about the discipline of your interest"?
